Wichita to Fort Collins

In Wichita we stopped to see Keeper of the Plains. There is a pedestrian walkway over to Plains Indian display. The Keeper was created in 1974 and is located at the confluence of the Big & Little Arkansas Rivers. The 44 foot, 5 ton sculpture of an Indian Chief sits on top of a 30 foot tall man made rock promontory. It was designed by Native Ameriocan artist Blackbear Bosin. At 7PM for 15 minutes it is surrounded by a "ring of fire". The beautiful building seen from walkway is Exploration Place, a science museum. After Wichita we stopped along the route at a few antique shops...nothing great at any of then though.

After a quick stop at Kohl’s we settled in at a Baymount in Salina. This Baymount was a gigantic improvement over the last one we stayed in a few years ago. Had a HUGE burger for dinner. Leaving Salina... we saw wind farms and oil wells..

Driving day from Salina Kansas to Fort Collins, Colorado. The atlas had a scenic route, #24, through small towns like Nicodemous (known as settlement area for newly freed Negroes after civil war) and Hill City (home of Oil Museum). Well, in my opinion the towns along this route paid Rand McNally to include those dots indicating scenic route on the map. Not very scenic to me. Plus, the Oil Museum was closed. Not the best "scenic route" we have ever taken for sure.

Once we crossed over into Colorado, tumbleweeds were blowing all over. It was extremely windy through Kansas and Colorado. Made it to Fort Collins and spent the night at LaQuinta. After dinner at Denny’s we took a ride around Fort Collins which is the home of Colorado State University.
